Abstract

Background. The work’s objective is to identify the impact of V. I. Vernadsky’s scientific trip in 1888 on the formation of his socio-political positions. The question of the role of scientific infrastructure, international scientific contacts for the scientist’s worldview is always relevant for studying the history of social thought.
Materials and methods. The work is based on a source study, primarily the scientist’s epistolary heritage, and the principle of historicism.
Results. Based on the analysis of sources, the author concludes that during his scientific trip abroad V. I. Vernadsky not only improved as a scientist but also got keenly interested in the issue of the socio-political structure and socio-political life and the organization of science and higher education in European countries. As a result, the scientist understood that there was a direct link between scientific creativity, government and social organization and individual freedom, which provides the possibility of personality’s implementation in various fields of activity.
Conclusions. The results and conclusions of the research will complement and expand scientific issues related to the study of the history of social movements in Russia at the end of the 19th century.
